Is physical reality real? – The Physical, Spiritual, and Quantum Planes of Human Existence.
Themes – Metaphysics, Existentialism, and Philosophy.
Have you ever wondered what makes the world seem and feel so real? In the end, the science reveals that everything is made of non-physical threads of waves, just like the historical scriptures say —“Everything is Spandan”, which in English means everything is a vibration or frequency. Then why does the physical reality feel more real? Or is there a deeper understanding to it that we often ignore?
Well, even the genius scientist, Nikola Tesla, said –
To relate to the fact, think of those situations or events of your life that left an emotional mark even after the events faded away long, long ago. Be it you coming out victorious in a game of basketball or a relationship that couldn’t last the way you expected. In case you have faced anxiety or withdrawal symptoms after a breakup or have experienced a trauma, you could relate – that even when the things around change, we still feel the hollowness brought by the gone incidents. Although that reality does not exist physically, except in thoughts, except only in thoughts, it still bends our reality, bringing the emotions from that non-physical realm. And with the same, we walk in a very different physical reality.
This thought experiment tells how memories and emotions that are non-physical in nature, walk parallel with our physical existence.
Now coming back to our question, is the physical reality as real as it seems, or is it all really waves and frequencies that create it, which we do experience every single moment of our lives, but somehow fail to notice?
To get to the answer, think about how we see the physical world around us. How do we feel and conclude them?
Basically, we see or interpret things around us through names, meanings that go with the respective names, their uses, and emotions related to them. If we talk about our parents, family, friends and loved ones, including our pets and the beloved members of our ecosystem out in the world, starting from the snails to lions to snakes – we interpret and assign them names, certain relationships, and beneath them flow emotions that we attach to them.
But, are the words that we speak, the meanings we assign to things, the emotions we carry for our relationships, the conclusions and logic we apply to events of the world, whether all these are physical or non-physical in nature? It’s a simple answer, that is the words, meanings, thoughts, and emotions. are non-physical in nature.
But for a moment, if we remove all the words, names, emotions, and meanings with which we interpret the world, what will remain? How would everything seem, feel, and mean?
Without any names and emotions for anything, everything will just become “A THING”. There would be no difference to feel between anything. Whether it would be a rock, a dog, the trees, or even our parents, without the names and the emotions that flow beneath them, everything will just become a piece of existence.
And the way we would experience the world in such a reality, will be much more numb than what we experience today.
Hence, though existence takes different shapes, structures, and forms, what creates the feeling of reality and real experiences—is the non-physical realm of thoughts, emotions, and meanings that walk hand in hand with the physical world.
It’s just like the dual wave-particle nature of our existence, which creates the entire reality that we experience every moment of our lives. And without that non-physical aspect, perhaps the physical world too would collapse in our brain.
Hence, it won’t be wrong to conclude from this observation that the reality we experience is made of a more non-physical aspect than physical one. While the physical reality has limitations and boundaries of space and time, the non-physical aspect of it — in forms of thoughts, imagination, and emotions, have no such limits. You can literally think of the inventions and technologies that don’t exist now in physical reality, while they can take shapes of thoughts, imagination, and inspiration.
But, this doesn’t mean we should start to live thinking of the world just as a wave and go crazy with it. Instead, it is to realize that non-physical aspects of ourselves, that are meanings, conclusions, and emotions we carry for things and situations, create the very reality we experience. It is to observe and know the fact of how our own world, from within and out, exists. And perhaps with this realization, we move forward towards deeper science and truth of our existence, which further propels us into the vision of the great scientist, Nikola Tesla, and unites us with what our scriptures and wise philosophers have told, since time immemorial.
But how do we work on the emotions, meanings, conclusions, and logic that our mind already carries and has been taught since we were born? Well, the first step is to know where they sit and emerge from, and that is the subconscious mind. And it’s another aspect of ourselves that constitutes almost 90-95% of our life’s decisions and actions, yet we live unaware of it. But how to be conscious of it? How to train the subconscious mind to see, understand, and interpret the world for the betterment of ourselves?
Well, we have answered all these questions about our subconscious mind in our article—“How to Train Your Subconscious Mind”—another contemplative and deep analysis of the world of self and existence, offering practical lessons and realizations about our conscious and subconscious minds.

FAQs - About whether the physical world is real or not?
- Is physical reality real or an illusion?
Yes, the physical reality is real. But that doesn’t mean how we perceive it with the limitations of our senses is the complete truth of reality. Our eyes can’t see the entire spectrum of light. Our ears can’t hear every frequency. We can’t even touch or sense the electromagnetic waves running throughout our body, by which we move, see, know, sense, breathe and stay alive. And to add to that, different life forms see and sense the world differently. They can hear and see different frequencies of sound and waves.
So to know the entire reality, just like in science, we need the Theory of Everything,, to sense the entire reality, we need a perception that is made of a combination of all the life forms that have existed, that exist now in the present, and would come into existence in the future.
- Is the world a physical existence or a wave?
Basically, the entire existence is made of a combination of its physical form and its wave nature. It’s very much established in science with De Broglie’s Wave-Particle Dual nature of matter.
From a human perspective, we can say that the existence, its every piece and form, communicates through its wave nature. And it takes physical forms and shapes by its particle nature.
So, yes. The Physical existence does exist, but in a merged form of both physical and non-physical waves.
