Sweta Das

The Day I met her.

That day we all gathered near the college lawn for a meeting related to MUN (Model United Nations) promotions. It was for the first time that I was participating in such an event. There were others, much experienced than me discussing amongst themselves about the requirements of the event. The official discussion regarding the same that would include all the organizing members was yet to take place.

I was standing alone beside my bike, as usual least concerned about most of things except the work that was given to me. Moving my head, my eyes fell on a girl who was standing with her friend on the other side of the road. She was different in her appearance. I believe its human tendency to be curious about those things that they rarely encounter in their life. This was such a situation for me.

I immediately remembered the chapter from my biology book that mentioned about various genetic disorders that occurs rarely to someone. Though I won’t call it a disorder, because it’s simply a thing or a phenomenon perhaps and nothing to be considered as a disorder. The condition is clinically called as Poly-Cystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) that affects one in 10 women in the world. This condition itself sometimes results into growth of excessive facial hairs in a woman (beards and moustache) which medically is termed as Hirsutism. But these were just the medical terms to study a different condition. Apart from that they smile, they feel, they care and they do everything like every one of us. So the thought to call it a disorder, itself must be a disorder.

She was among the rare ones who own a unique physical appearance yet a strong personality. She had a bit longer facial hairs than the other girls do, but that didn’t make her any less of a girl. Her ethereal smile conveyed her pride of being who she is and what she possesses. Though there were questions out of curiosity in my mind, but there were none on her face.

Before I could get more curious and boggled in my head, I heard her speaking to her friend. I don’t remember the exact words but my memory serves me pretty well about the discussion being something good and valuable.

The way she was speaking, the confidence in her voice, the smile never leaving her face and most importantly the positive energy radiating from her was all around and it did come to me as well. Once more, my curiosity raised so many questions in my mind about her, but there she stood totally unbothered by the questioning gazes of people around her. She was happy in her world, confident, proud about herself and as I said, she had that positive aura.

I don’t know what it was, but in my head I was sure that she herself is a change to those social stigmas that resides in the darkest corners of our mind. With that smile on her face, I was sure that she will bring that social reform. For a moment I felt that she is blessed with this uniqueness, as a symbol of change.

Later we became friends and we still are. She is an amazing person, an inspiration with no doubt and with a smile of million volts of positivity, she is surely an emblem of change.

  1. Heyy Dhruti,
I feel both of us have shared a lot of memories together…Hope you must be remembering a lot of incidents that both of us witnessed when we were out there in our school. But what is quite comprehensible , I would say the sheer talent and self confidence that you have been carrying on your shoulder when you took all those quite never imaginable decisions in your life in the past in a society where kids are raised to struggle for a normal 9-5 life is really commendable. The something out of the track imagination and the dreams of yours are relentlessly paving your way for a something lot better than a normal for you. And I am sure, one day when you would try to look back and ponder about every single thing you decided and have done in your life will definitely make you feel so proud of yourself which you should be. And me as a friend of yours if I could help you in any way don’t ever hesitate to ask me for…I would say whatever that is possible from my end I will be there for you…
    Lots of Love,
    Ankit Samal…
